Happy New Year. Welcome to 2018.
The year begins with a Full Moon in Cancer today, January 1, at 9:24 pm EST. Tomorrow, Uranus goes direct after being retrograde since August.
Uranus has been in the sign of Aries since 2011 and will remain there until May of this year, when it enters Taurus. This is a significant transit that I will be writing about in more detail soon.
Today, I just want to focus on the Moon. This is the first of two full moons in January. When there are two full moons in one calendar month, the second is called a Blue Moon.
We’ll actually have two blue moons in 2018. The first will be on January 31, and the second on March 31. Because of how the dates land, February will be without a Full Moon.
Full moons often have a reputation for intensity, and the Cancer Full Moon typically seems to go that way in my experience. Cancer’s sentimental, sensitive energy is at its peak here. The Moon is Cancer’s ruler. It is at home, in its full, emotive glory.
The Moon is water. It is an ocean, a heart that waits to swallow you whole.
What will you find when you swim to the bottom? Deep, nourishing love? Or tears? The sweat of pining, of longing for something that was once held dear?
These are deep thoughts for the first day of the year, I know. But this is the space that today’s Moon wants us to occupy.
It wants us to go deep. To get nostalgic. To take stock of what’s been lost and gained, and what hope we still hold for the future.
Cancer cherishes memories.
It also holds grudges. It knows what it means to regret, and to wish things had turned out differently.
These are things many of us think about as we face a new year. It’s a time of re-evaluation and resolutions. We say to ourselves, “I’ll get it right this time,” or, “Never again.”
With today’s Full Moon, don’t be surprised if you feel more tender than usual. Things can get blown out of proportion. Your feelings can become inflated. You might feel more open to sharing some personal feelings, or might want to hide away rather than linger over any remaining holiday festivities.
The Five of Wands was the card I pulled for this week’s forecast. I was immediately drawn to the branches this woman holds in her hands.
Three are held up. Are they offerings, or a sign of guardedness? Are the other two representative of hopes she is holding onto? Something she knows she has in her back pocket perhaps?
Or maybe those branches are her choices for the year to come. The Five of Wands often speaks of a busy mind, and a need to rise above the noise and competition of our day-to-day lives. Maybe here, this card speaks to the choices and plans that this Full Moon can now illuminate:
What will you choose to hold dear to you in 2018? What are you ready to cherish?
Until next time,
