This morning, as I was getting ready for the day, I was thinking about the words I would share with you here this week.
And in that process, I was reflecting back on where I’m at right now.
“Summer has really become a time of re-evaluation for me,” I told a friend recently. “I keep feeling like every time summer rolls around, I’m suddenly making new plans and starting new projects.”
But has it always been this way? What happened to the carefree, adventurous summers I used to have?
And then it hit me: We’ve been in this Aquarius-Leo eclipse cycle. How could I forget that for the past few summers, we’ve been broken open by these energies?
Lunar eclipses arrive with full moons; solar with new moons. Lunar eclipses can create inner change, and solar can create outer. Lunar eclipses can signal endings – as do full moons, which are times of completion and culmination – and solar eclipse can herald beginnings, like new moons.
This Saturday, August 11, we welcome the New Moon in Leo and solar eclipse at 5:58am EST.
Eclipses help us crystallize our intentions so that we can see exactly what needs to come to a close in order to make room for what’s to come.
Leo and Aquarius are both very creative signs. Leo wants to express itself. Symbolized by the lion and ruled by the sun, Leo must roar.
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of innovation and rebellion. Aquarius needs freedom. It doesn’t see the point in being held down by old rules that no longer apply.
This eclipse series has been stirring up all kinds of questions about freedom, and the time and space you need to live with your life with purpose and intention:
Who owns your time?
What do you want to share with the world?
What patterns do you keep bumping against that keep you from fulfilling your potential?
In reflecting on my own experiences and desires these past few summers, I realize that my soul has been aching to create as much as possible. Writing is a huge part of my life, but I put a lot of my writing on hold for a number of years to help my mother, and to work in the non-profit industry.
“There are a lot of books that aren’t being written right now because of people’s day jobs,” a friend of mine said to me one day in July.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
This truth doesn’t just apply to writers. It applies to everyone who is feeling worn to the bone with the blurred boundaries we live in right now when it comes to time, privacy, and expectations around being available to anyone, anywhere, 24/7.
“You are now at the precipice of two worlds – the old comfy situation that is just basically over, and the nascent paradigm that feels more risky and will take courage to fully embrace,” writes astrologer Rebecca Gordon. “There is likely something very specific that is eclipsing into and out from your life right now.”
I pulled the Ten of Swords for this week’s card. In the Cosmic Tarot, which I fell in love with this spring, the Ten of Swords is even more dramatic than usual. Typically, this is the card that depicts someone face down with ten swords in their back.
It is a card of endings, a cycle completed. The transition of that ending manifests in a new identity, a new way of thinking and being.
The Cosmic Tarot has a much more surreal, jarring quality to it. At first, it threw me off. But when I took the time to study this image, I was drawn to the light that is emanating from the person we see here.
As though they are being broken open by all that they have endured. If you look beyond the pain of change, there is payoff. The light not only shines, but it shines through you.
Use this weekend’s new lunar cycle, and the catalytic nature of this solar eclipse, to make more room in your life. Clear the slate of what’s standing in your way.
And if you can’t make it all budge just yet? Think of how you can channel your intentions into symbolic action. I find that doing a deep clean of my home – including clearing out my closet of clothes I no longer wear, or finally organizing that junk drawer – can do wonders in shifting the energy in your life.
Embrace the change that feels necessary, even if it’s not the easier choice. This is a time to move beyond your comfort zone. It’s there, on the other side of what seems so daunting, that the light is usually waiting to break through.
If it helps, here is an intention you can use throughout the week:
I am ready for my next step.
And if you’d like to connect with the energy of this New Moon and solar eclipse, here is a tarot spread to work with:
1. Where can I create more space in my life?
2. What can enter my world as a result?
3. What can I do to get out of my comfort zone?
4. What kind of growth will I experience once I shake things up?
All the best to you this eclipse season.
Until next time,
p.s. Are you craving some time and space away from the day-to-day this summer? I’m co-hosting a magical, one-day retreat here in Ontario with the very accomplished Marilyn Shannon.
We’ll be teaching on magic, tarot, and nature, and we have two dates to choose from. Join us later this August. Spaces are limited. Registration and full details are right here: The Nature of Tarot.
