The Sun entered Pisces this weekend, on Sunday, February 18, moving us into a new season, a new flavour for the next 30 days.

Here, we enter the element of water. Often, Aquarius is mistaken for a water sign, as it is symbolized as the water bearer, but Aquarius is an air sign.

Part of its spectrum of characteristics is that it can become emotionally disconnected, sometimes choosing to check out or evade a situation rather than face conflict or discomfort head-on.

Now, the pendulum swings. Pisces plumbs the depths of the subconscious. Sometimes, it feels things so deeply that it gets confused about what is real, what is illusion. This is the danger of the water element: Delusion and suspicion run strong here.

Emotions can also become overwhelming in Pisces season. This is the sign that exists to transcend. It constantly seeks divine connection, and life on earth feels like it’s too much, Pisces wants to escape by any means. It likes to retreat, to drown in its feelings.

I talk about the shadow side of Pisces today because the card for the week is the Five of Cups. Traditionally, this card carries emotional weight. It asks us to look at what we continue to hold onto, even if it something from deep in the past.

Pisces stirs us up. It can bring up old memories, nostalgia, longings, grudges, and even forgotten hopes.

But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It doesn’t all have to hurt.

It helps to remember that Pisces’ function within the zodiac is to help us find deeper connection to our divine paths. This is the final sign of the zodiac, the one that transcends, that embraces a spiritual connection, because it is closing a cycle.

While we often connect Scorpio – another water sign – to death and rebirth in the zodiac, Pisces brings another kind of ending to the current cycle we are in. This is the final month of the zodiac calendar.

Pisces helps us to become aware of the emotional energy we are carrying and asks, “What’s necessary here? What do you still need, and what is it time to let go of?”

Pisces also follows Aquarius, where we connect to ideas of our future selves, so that we can forge new connections to the soul’s purpose.

This is where we can allow our old selves and identities to pass away so that we may become renewed by the time spring – Aries energy – arrives.

And so if things feel a little heavy, or you suddenly find yourself moving through the day with a heightened awareness and you need a little more alone time, pay attention. That’s what so much of this work comes back to:

Listen, listen, listen.

We are meant to be moving through different rhythms all the time. And now, we are in another season, and the final days of a year-long astrological cycle.

If it helps, here is a mantra to use in the days ahead:

“I will let my feelings go where they need to.”

Until next time,
