Welcoming the last New Moon of the year

Seven of CupsHappy New Moon in Sagittarius!

The New Moon in Sagittarius arrived at 1:30am EST today, giving us an exciting start to the week.

While many people out there are feeling the crush of the holidays and the hectic schedules this time of year can bring, let’s not lose sight of ourselves in the process.

No matter what we have going on, or what’s happening around us, let’s not forget to take some time to check in and ask: “What am I feeling right now?”

For me personally, I always have trouble reconciling with December. I struggle with the expectations of the season to be in many different places at once, when deep down, all I want to do is sit with my journal and a pile of unread books. I want to map out my year ahead, pull some tarot cards along the way, and catch up on my reading.

I struggle, too, with feeling too regimented at all at this time of year, especially as we get closer to the Winter Solstice. I just don’t want to feel too committed, or too boxed in, when it comes to traditions around the holidays.

I want the freedom to be able to choose how and when I show up, and to ensure I can hold space for myself despite the hectic demands of the season, demands that don’t always seem to fit with the energy of the solstice or the astrology of this time of year.

The New Moon in Sagittarius does not like to be held down. It’s also the last New Moon of 2017, making it a special one – particularly for its defiance in this way. Whatever intentions you set at this time, make them count.

Remember, Sagittarius is expansive, boundless. This New Moon comes late in Sagittarius season. In just a few days, on Thursday, December 21, the Sun will shift into Capricorn, marking the beginning of winter.

Today’s New Moon helps you to get a glimpse of what you might want to move towards in 2018.

What do you want to see, touch, feel, learn, or understand in the year to come? As the season, and the year, wind down, today’s New Moon in Sagittarius asks you to make a wish upon a star tonight. It encourages you to think big, think about what you want to hope this next year can bring.

What do you want to see, touch, feel, know, learn, or understand in 2018? The New Moon in Sagittarius is the one to use to tap into the potential of what’s to come.

I feel that this last check-in is going to be an important one for questions like these, especially as Saturn prepares to leave Sagittarius and enters Capricorn this Wednesday, December 20.

This is a big deal. Saturn has been transiting through Sagittarius since 2014. These two don’t really go to together: Saturn restricts, while Sagittarius stretches. While it’s been a beneficial transit in terms of pushing us to learn and commit to some of our bigger, more unwieldly goals, this transit has also brought a lot of reality checks that might have left a trail of disappointment in its wake. Saturn struggles to function to its full capacity in Sagittarius.

Change is in the air with this transit. I’ll be sharing more on this later, as it deserves a post of its own.

But for now, know that this week asks you to make an extra effort to anchor your dreams into reality, to think about what might truly be possible for you in the year ahead.

Mercury stations direct this Friday, December 22, which will also help to move things forward.

See what I mean when I say it’s a hard time of year to reconcile all of the different energies and priorities that can come up right now?

The Seven of Cups was pulled for this week’s forecast. This is a card of potential, an open channel that attracts ideas and opportunities to be considered.

But what will you choose?

Use these last few days of Sagittarius season to dream up some plans for the year ahead if you haven’t already. Once Capricorn’s energy kicks in later this week, you’ll be able to work out exactly how to make it all happen.

Here’s a mantra for the week ahead:

I am making space to dream.

And if you’d like to work with the New Moon in Sagittarius, here’s a tarot spread you might like to try:

1. What am I wishing for?
2. What am I ready for?
3. How can I expand my horizons?
4. How can I fuel my dreams?

Until next time,

Liz xo
