The first full week of January is an active one, astrologically, but for many of us, it’s also a week of getting back to business. I’m not sure about you, but in my downtown neighbourhood, the streets have been eerily quiet these past couple of weeks.
But I know that as soon as Monday rolls around, everything will feel back to normal as people and businesses get back into their regular routines and schedules.
There is a Mercury retrograde beginning on Tuesday, January 5, and Jupiter goes retrograde on Thursday, January 7.
Mercury retrogrades tend to cause a lot of unnecessary panic. I’m seeing both of these retrogrades as reminders that just because it’s “business as usual” after the holidays, it doesn’t mean that we need to lose touch with the natural cycles that our hearts, minds, and bodies crave connection to.
Remember that the Winter Solstice is only a couple of weeks behind us, and the season of rest and reflection is still young. Sometimes, we need to give into the pressure and demands of daily life, but that doesn’t mean making a full sacrifice of what we know we need as well.
So pay close attention to your own ebbs and flows in the coming weeks. Mercury rules ideas and communication. The last time Mercury was in retrograde this past fall, I got a ton of ideas for things I would like to create. That’s the power of the Mercury retrograde; it can help you see new paths, new strategies, and highlight what’s not working as well as it could be.
But it’s also a time of necessary pause and reflection, and a time to let those ideas gestate and take root so that they can be implemented in the future.
And with Jupiter going retrograde in Virgo on Thursday, January 7, I think the emphasis on slowing down and reviewing routines and structure is going to become a big area of focus for many, thanks to Virgo’s influence.
Virgo rules health, our connection to the environment, and how we serve, and this retrograde, which lasts until May 9, can be a boost to anyone who’s looking to implement the structure they need to take up a new health regime, or find ways to better themselves or the world around them.
You might find yourself finally admitting that you are on the verge of burning out, for example, and this January can help you bring in the boundaries that you need to set for yourself in order to get back to feeling the way you know you need to.
And finally, there is a New Moon in Capricorn on Saturday, January 9, the perfect time to start working on any New Year’s resolutions if you haven’t gotten yours off the ground yet. Capricorn is industrious, and structured, and this first New Moon of the year offers a proactive energy that you can tap into if there’s something that you know needs some solid focus and attention.
All of this planetary activity feels like the perfect fit for the energy of the Two of Pentacles, which is a card of balance and deliberate expansion. It’s a card that reminds us that all priorities need to remain balanced.
We always have multiple balls in the air: Our work, our friends, our family, our health, our spirituality, our own interests and hobbies. Put too much emphasis in a single area, and we risk dropping the ball on something else.
The two retrogrades that are moving in this week are complemented by the grounded energy that the New Moon in Capricorn can offer. These are all reminders that we need to be flexible with ourselves, especially in a world of increasing demands.
This is a time to remind yourself that you know what you need above all else, and this first week of January brings an ideal time to begin to put the structures in place that you’ll need in order to protect those needs.
Here’s a mantra to help you connect with this week’s energy: “I am of service to the world when I put my mind and body first.”

“I am very happy to have had my first experience of Tarot with Liz Worth. I think anyone getting their first reading can feel a bit awkward and maybe even a bit trepidatious but Liz not only put me at ease and made me feel completely comfortable but her enthusiasm was infectious and I left the reading excited for the future and the insights I gained. I think, above all else, I appreciated her honesty, both emotional and literal. It was a fantastic experience – one I wont hesitate to have again in the future.”
