Can tarot tell me what my career path is?

One of my favourite types of tarot readings is when I have the opportunity to explore what someone’s path and purpose might be.

One of my favourite types of tarot readings is when I have the opportunity to explore what someone’s path and purpose might be.

I know that some readers feel differently, as they don’t want to be seen as dictating what someone should or shouldn’t do.

But I don’t see these types of readings like this. I can strongly relate to clients who feel a bit stuck, or lost, or unclear about what direction they should take.

It’s common to feel like you are here to do something with your life, but not know what that is exactly, or how to act upon it.

It’s also common to be unsure as to whether you career might overlap with your sense of purpose; sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn’t.

I’ve seen readings that show someone’s purpose is strongly related to their friendships and community-building; for others, it’s been their love of fostering animals and volunteering at shelters.

And those types of messages can influence how we view our work situations, too. For example, some of my clients have gotten inspired by these types of messages by initiating food drives at their offices, and creating social clubs for their companies.

When we open up to questions about career path and allow ourselves, and our querents, to be open-minded and creative about the shape these answers can take, then we move away from the pressure to assign someone to a career.

Helping querents to see that there can be many ways to embrace your sense of purpose is exciting.

Someone whose path has to do with being of service could become a life coach, or work in the charitable sector.

But they could also decide to keep their day job and become a youth mentor in the evenings, or learn something like tarot with the aim of one day giving readings to others.

“But tarot cards don’t have jobs baked into them!”

This was something I used to worry about when I started reading for others and was faced with these questions: How was I even supposed to delineate these types of answers?

Again, opening myself up to the possibilities of what tarot can signify, rather than shrinking into pigeon-holed views of the cards was my turning point here.

As I worked at this, I started to understand that the suits all have their own priorities, as do the Major Arcana. Once I started to look at what the cards themselves like to do and how they would pursue goals in the real-world, I started to see more to their guidance than I first assumed.

These are some of the things we cover in Taking Tarot to the Next Level. I’m teaching a live round of this practical, querent-centric program starting on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

There are many ways we can hold space for these types of conversations with querents, and many ways we can read a tarot card.

If you’d like to expand upon your client skills this year (or work up to doing readings for others), this intermediate-level class is for you.

Join here.

Until next time,

Liz
